Getting your rug stained can happen to anyone. There is a solution for cleaning up nearly all kinds of stains from rugs, but you need to take the proper steps in a timely manner, and you must treat the different types of stains on different types of rugs accordingly. Here are some general and some specific tips to follow when dealing with stains on your rug:
#1 Act as quickly as possible, with the exception of mud stains which are better left to dry before removing them!
#2 Read any labels and cleaning instructions on your rug before proceeding.
#3 Try to get as much of the excess liquid or non-liquid material spilled on your rug off.
#4 Always proceed by blotting off the excess liquid with a clean cloth – dampened or dry. Never rub the spill, because you will only cause the spilled liquid to get rubbed deeper in the rug and can possibly just cause the spill to spread further if you rub it.
#5 Keep blotting the spill until there is no more transfer of the spilled liquid to the cloth or paper towel.
#6 Remember to test any rug cleaning or stain removal solution on a small hidden spot on your rug before using it on your rug. Wait for at least 20 minutes to see if there is a discolouration or other damage done by the solution to your rug.
#7 For stains which are water soluble, such as coffee, blood, tea, chocolate, wine or vomit, use a clean cloth dampened either in a lukewarm and a mild dish washing detergent, or if your rug can handle it, a spoon of ammonia mixed with a cup of lukewarm water.
#8 For greasy stains, including oil, wax or fat place a paper towel on top of the spill and iron it with a warm iron. The greasy substance should be transferred to the paper towel.
#9 For urine stains, us a solution of lukewarm water and distilled vinegar and a clean cloth. Dampen it and blot it. Repeat. After you are done, sprinkle baking soda on the stain to remove any leftover urine odour from the rug.
#10 Nail polish stains can be removed with nail polish remover, rubbing alcohol or hairspray on a clean cloth. For dry nail polish stains, use an old toothbrush to brush it off of the fibers of your rug.
#11 Glue stains can be removed with a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol.
